Kenya . Maasai Mara . 2012

I came to Kenya to photograph and film a project together with my friend Joel Lim. This was the adventure we shared in Kenya - one of the most humbling yet motivating places you can ever visit.

The Lion of Lucerne actually has a very amusing history. Carl Pfyffer von Altishofen commissioned this monument by asking Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen to design the sculpture. However, it is said that Pfyffer hid the truth that he didn't have enough money to pay Thorvaldsen. When the artist learned about it, he decided to show his disgust by altering the monument but out of respect for the soldiers it was built for, he left the Lion intact. Instead, he purposely altered the alcove of the lion into the shape of a Pig. Apparently, no one noticed the Pig until it was completed and it stands there today - a reminder of the artist's disdain.

Guizhou . 2008

Guizhou is a mountainous province in SouthWestern China and home to China's many minority groups including the Miao and Yao tribes. These photographs are taken from a short trip to understand the Miao culture - their people, their music, and their incredible folk dances.

Whatever gifts - food, candies, drinks that we brought along for the villagers were distributed evenly so that every child had a share of the presents. I realise once they have a Chupa Chups on hand, they tend to be much less resistant to being photographed...

The innocence of childhood. Guizhou is one of the poorest regions of China so it's a very warm feeling to see that even a simple stick of lollipop can bring these young ones so much joy. There's so much we in the developed world take for granted and sometimes, I think there's a lot we can experience by seeing how some of the simplest things in life can mean so much to others. E.L
