About Ejun Low“The longer I photograph people…
the less interested I become in what they do, and the more interested I become in who they are.”
A different definition of success.
Some people spend their lives climbing the corporate ladder.
I spent my early years building a creative agency.
For almost a decade, I worked with brands, led creative projects and immersed myself in the world of design and advertising. It was rewarding work, but over time I began to realise that success on paper and fulfilment in life are not always the same thing.
In 2014, I founded Pentaprism and dedicated myself to portrait photography.
What began as a fascination with photographing people soon became a lifelong study of character, ambition, resilience and identity. Through my camera, I found myself meeting doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, leaders and everyday individuals at different stages of their journeys.
Along the way, I also discovered the value of balance, family and building a life that leaves room for the people who matter most. Today, my work is guided by those experiences. I create portraits that reflect not only what someone does, but who they have become.
Over the years, I have come to appreciate that the most accomplished people are often the least interested in talking about their accomplishments. Instead, they speak about their families, their values, the setbacks they have overcome and the lessons they have gathered along the way. It is this human side that continues to fuel my curiosity, not only as a photographer, but as a person still learning and growing through the stories of others.
Beyond photography…
Photography has never been solely about creating images.
It has given me the privilege of meeting hundreds of people and hearing their stories. Some have built companies. Some have rebuilt their lives. Others have quietly dedicated themselves to serving their communities, families and professions.
These conversations continue to shape how I see the world.
They are also why mentoring young photographers remains an important part of my work. Many of the photographers who trained under me have gone on to develop creative careers of their own, and several continue to work alongside me through Pentaprism today.
Over the years, I have come to realise that the people I admire most are rarely the loudest in the room. They are often individuals who have spent years refining their craft, carrying responsibility for others, and continuing to show up long after the novelty has worn off. Doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, parents and leaders may walk very different paths, but many share a quiet commitment to something greater than themselves.
Perhaps that is why I am drawn to portraiture. A photograph can reveal far more than appearance alone. It can become a reflection of experience, character and the life a person has built over time. Long after titles change and careers evolve, these are often the qualities that remain.
In many ways, photography has become less about cameras and more about people.
And that truly, is what keeps me going after all these years.
The strongest leaders are often the
most thoughtful listeners.
The most accomplished people are
rarely those trying hardest to appear
impressive.
Some of the most remarkable
individuals I've met would never
describe themselves that way.
